LightHorse Healthcare, Inc. &
the Cumberland Island Horse Project

What does the Cumberland Island horses have to do with a non-profit Integrative Behavioral Healthcare organization providing traditional and experiential mental health services to the community?

The original mission of LightHorse Healthcare, Inc. and the language included on our original 501(c)3 application is 2007 included: “a secondary purpose…to establish ocean, wildlife and/or wilderness based experiential education and experiential psychotherapy program utilizing a Spiritual based philosophy in our equine based programs.”

Simply put, LightHorse Healthcare, Inc. is founded on a philosophy that all humans and animals are inextricably connected to one another. The health and wellbeing of one individual or species directly relates to the health and wellbeing of all other species in a community. The plight of the Cumberland Island horses is the plight of the people of Camden County and the larger nation because those horses belong to the people of the United States of America, and like many other free roaming herds on other NPS barrier island parks, this herd and the people that connect to them deserve a better outcome than they have now or than what is proposed for their future.

LightHorse Healthcare, Inc. staff members have worked, consulted and advocated for an acceptable horse management program for the Cumberland Island horses since 2007 and been a proponent of experiential education on the island increasing the value of the island to the NPS and the community. We as an organization stand for total health and wellness of the individual and the community which means the health and wellness of the larger environment as well. We have been gifted with the expertise, connections and resources to negotiate and execute a workable horse management program that will solve many of the problems for the herd, the island and the NPS.
